The Cycle of Abuse
Every story has a beginning. Every drug abuse problem has a solution. But for the person on the cycle, neither will seem to be of much use to him. It is the inability to overcome any stage of the cycle of drug abuse that keeps the addict caught up in a seemingly downward spiral of hopelessness.
People usually start with a motive to try drugs for the first time. Peer pressure, problems at home or at work, medical or personal problems that may appear trivial at first, perhaps even curiosity may push a person to experiment with drugs. It would not be long before they would find the initial effects of drugs gratifying.
To the user, drugs may appear to make his problems go away. In reality, drugs do not make the problems go away; it just makes the user not care. It makes the user numb, and without feeling the initial hurt in his life, he may feel the initial euphoria all users experience. It would be like he has found the solution to all his problems.
And so he continues to not only use drugs, but as he desperately tries to apply the drugs to every negative aspect his life, he will eventually try to use more and more of the drug. Eventually, the user will have lost focus of why he was using the drugs in the first place. As his body continues to get used to the drugs in his system, he will require more and more of the same drug just to experience the first feelings of euphoria. The more he continues to do drugs, the more his body will have to need drugs. And so the cycle begins.
As the user's focus will shift from initial priorities in his life, he will start to neglect his personal and professional obligations. His priorities will have shifted to drugs. All he will care about will be looking for and getting drugs. He may no longer find use for a regular job as this would just interfere with his ability to use drugs. Everything else will become a nuisance.
Personal relationships will begin to suffer as he tries to hide his addiction from friends and family. Without a source of money, he may begin to steal just so could overcome the effects of drug cravings. The drugs will have changed the user for worse.
Drugs will eventually be the central focus of his life; all he would be able to think about is where he can get his next stash and how he will pay for it. Having neglected his job, his family, his friends, and having used up all of his money, he will turn to anything just to be able to get money for his addiction.
By this time the drugs would have overtaken his body as well as his life. His body will have gotten used to the drugs in his system and will now crave for more drugs just to function well. His body will experience pain, shaking and agonizing withdrawal symptoms, and the user will do anything to stop the pain. The drugs will also induce depression. The pain and depression will be the two most difficult hurdles he will have to overcome to stop the cycle. If he is unable to overcome these, he will not be able to pull himself out of the cycle of drug abuse that has overtaken his life.
